Sassafras Genus Details
Sassafras is a native tree found in the eastern U.S. Sassafras grows from 30-50' tall and its leaves are 3-5" long, 2-4" wide with 3 broad lobes. The leaves are shiny green above and paler beneath, turning orangish-red in autumn. Flowers are 3/8" long, yellowish-green and found clusters. The black berry fruit is 3/8" diameter and contains one shiny brown seed which matures in autumn. Sassafras roots supply oil of sassafras used to perfume soap, tea and root beer flavor. In herbal medicine it was used as a dental disinfectant and also for the treatment of rheumatic pain.
